Fire Extinguisher Maintenance: A Guide

Introduction

Proper maintenance of fire extinguishers is crucial to ensure they are ready to use in case of an emergency. Regular inspections, testing, and refilling are essential components of a comprehensive maintenance program.

Regular Inspections
  • Visual Checks: Conduct monthly inspections to check for any signs of damage, corrosion, or leaks. Ensure the extinguisher is securely mounted and easily accessible.
  • Pressure Gauge: Verify that the pressure gauge is in the green zone, indicating the extinguisher is fully charged.
  • Pin and Seal: Check that the safety pin and tamper seal are intact.
Testing
  • Annual Hydrostatic Testing: For most extinguishers, a hydrostatic test is required every six years to ensure the cylinder can withstand pressure. This test is typically performed by a certified technician.
Refilling
  • When to Refill: Refill extinguishers after use, when the pressure gauge drops below the green zone, or if the extinguisher is more than 12 years old.
  • Professional Refilling: It’s recommended to have extinguishers refilled by a certified technician to ensure proper procedures and compliance with regulations.
  • Refilling Process: The technician will discharge the extinguisher, inspect it for damage, recharge it with the appropriate agent, and reseal it.
Additional Considerations
  • Training: Ensure that employees are trained on how to use fire extinguishers properly and understand the different types of extinguishers suitable for various fire classes.
  • Location: Place extinguishers in strategic locations throughout the building, such as near exits, stairways, and areas with high fire hazards.
  • Maintenance Records: Keep accurate records of all inspections, tests, and refilling to ensure compliance with regulations and for future reference.
